NFPA 70E 2012 has been in effect for nearly six weeks. As with previous versions of NFPA 70E it requires labeling of arc flash hazards, but those arc flash labeling standards have been revised. We’ll talk more about the changes to arc flash label requirementsin a future post. In this post I’ll be talking about the need for arc flash labels.
Arc flash labels are essentially the last line of defense against an arc flash injury. Labels do not provide the protection PPE provides. Labels do not provide a physical barrier blocking an arc flash. Labels do not limit current or shut off the power. These statements all sound ridiculous. No piece of paper can do any of these things. What a an arc flash label does is provide information. They warn about the existence of the potential for an arc flash. They inform about the protective measures that need to be taken.
An important factor with arc flash labels is that they be readable from a safe distance. People must be warned about the danger before they are close enough to be harmed. This means that, in same cases, “over-sized” labels may be appropriate. Not only must people see that there is a warning label, they must be able to read the warning information and take appropriate action.
Arc flash labels in outdoor locations require special attention. You cannot always use the same label materials that have been used on equipment located within buildings. Sunlight, weather, rain, temperature changes all will damage a label. A label material suitable for outdoor locations must be used. Sunlight, in particular, is very damaging to labels – causing them to fade and crack. An outdoor grade labeling stock will be resistant to sunlight and provide a much longer life.
