Wayfinding is the use of signs and labels to help direct people through aisles, hallways and corridors. They can be used on walls and floors to assist in locating items and locations. Wayfinding is commonly used to show where emergency exits are.
A visual wayfinding system includes orientation, directional information, destination identification, and situation/object identification. The signs and labels are made up of text, safety symbols, maps, photographs and/or diagrams. It is important that there is consistency in the design of signs and labels so people can quickly and easily understand the message.
Common uses of wayfinding signs and labels include:
- Directional signs: Provides employees with directions to all relevant locations within a work setting.
- Floor Marking: Assigns floor space for equipment and supplies
- Aisle Marking: Color-coded signs and labels can mark aisles according to a site directory.
- Shadow Marking: Labels peg-boards and wall space to show correct placement of hanging tools and supplies.
For better wayfinding visibility use a DuraLabel 9000 sign and label printer. This printer can print signs up to 9” which will give clear visibility from a distance. Also, using DuraLabel supplies such as 2-way sign placards and BoldGlo Phosphorescent Tapes will enhance the effectiveness of the wayfinding signs.
